We chose South East Timber and Damp to install their tanking system in a number of rooms at a Victorian house we are currently renovating in the Tunbridge Wells area. We met Dean at the property and went through everything clearly. He’s a nice guy and listened to all our concerns. He followed the brief exactly and we are very happy with the final result. All the walls are now plastered smoothly ready for painting. We’d like to thank them and also recommend them to anyone else.

Avoid this business at all costs. They initially quoted £700, then that went up to £2500 upon site visit. We reluctantly agreed, and obtained permission from our management company. Dean then asked for over £3000, because they had failed to mention VAT. We also decided we only wanted the outside done (not the inside redecorating) in order to reduce costs. Dean had previously divided the costs. He then denied this and said the £2500 + vat was just for the external, despite all communication to the contrary. When we queried this, politely, via email, we were routinely ignored. The office field calls, but add little value - they make promises of calls back that are never kept, adding to frustration. I spent weeks chasing - on average it takes about 3 weeks for a single reply, and normally the communication is incomplete e.g. basic requests for clear fees. Then, weeks before the work is due to take place, they abandon the project entirely. They lack integrity and don't even care that they've left people in the lurch - all because they aren't upfront about costs, don't reply to communication and have an (at best) 'disorganised' approach to fee disclosure.

He didn't try to sell us any products and was more than happy to recommend a route forward to solve the damp problems. He answered all our questions. Not impressed at all. Would not recommend. Payed £114 for the pleasure of Dean to turn up confirm what others had said for free and no quotation was given. Needed a spray of some downstairs joists and floorboards verbally quoted 30% more than others had quoted for the same work. The only thing I have received from them is the Invoice for my £114 stating that I paid for "Snapshot Survey" and NO WRITTEN REPORT IS PROVIDED WITH A "SNAPSHOT" SURVEY. IF YOU REQUIRE A WRITTEN REPORT PLEASE UPGRADE TO A "COMPREHENSIVE" SURVEY PRIOR TO ATTENDANCE. Slightly naive on my part but over a hundred pound for a guy to turn up for 30 min, with no follow up, email, quote or estimate, isn't my idea of value nor service. Dean clearly knows his field but buyer beware and let it be known there are better alternatives out there.

Not particularly impressed with SE. I had them do a survey on a property I'm buying and though on the surface the survey apppeared detailed - the language was all very construction-centric and there were 'handy' (literally) pictures of someone holding a damp meter against a wall (not sure why?!) I was quoted around 15k in remediation work. I then got 2 subsequent quotes from other workmen who came in at least 40% under that and suggested I wouldn't need much of what was recommended. I would be careful here; as a first time buyer it's easy to get your pants pulled down. I also requested my quote/survey be reviewed by the director - to which I didn't get any response. If you're going to pay for a damp survey, I would suggest doing a background check on the qualifications, experience and the 'SEO' listing for companies - i.e. if they come first on google isn't reflective of greatness! I'm sure SE do good work - but perhaps it's not always the 'necessary' work.
