Favourite place for a guest beer in York, that lets children and grumpy older sister's in, always a decent choice of Yorkshire, and further afield, brews, usually a darker stout or porter, that I prefer. Landlady and landlord are friendly, and will chat when it's quiet, staff are quick and friendly also. Pork pies are worth going in for.

The pub experience was terrible. We were told that the pub is dog friendly, but ironically the barman was not dog friendly at all. Our dog was off the lead for less than a minute, briefly on the furniture, and we were asked in a highly impolite and unpleasant fashion to keep the dog on lead at all times. We do not mind the rules at all, in fact completely respect it, but the barman could have been polite in his ways. We had to leave the pub, with just 6 customers including ourselves already, after the very first drink because of the irksome experience.
