I have had to update my review due to the appalling customer service I received yesterday. To date, I have multiple units with Shurgard across various branches. I pay hundreds of pounds every month via direct debit, so I was shocked to discover I had a debt collection agency contacting me about a fee I owed. I called the branch to ask what was happening and why. All of my other units were taken from a single monthly payment and if I add or remove units, the direct debit is adjusted accordingly. The member of staff told me the fee was outstanding from a unit I vacated months ago. I have received no correspondence about this fee. Just a letter from debt collectors saying final notice. When I asked why and how this happened, the staff member said it was because I had 2 client accounts, one in my personal name and one in my business name. She said "this is why you shouldn't open 2 accounts". I told her I did not know this would cause confusion and she said this is what can happen when you have more than one account, and repeated that I should not have opened two client accounts. This was borderline insulting at this point, so I asked the million dollar question. I asked her, "are you suggesting opening 2 accounts is my fault, given I have no idea of your internal procedures?" She replied, "ummm well yeah it is". I asked for her name. She told me she had given me her name at the beginning of the call and she doesn't need to give it again. I said I'd like to know who I'm talking to. She repeated, I already told you my name, I don't have to tell you again. I then said I've forgotten her name, she repeated again that she does not need to tell me her name. I told her she was being extremely childish and unprofessional. I asked to speak to someone more senior in the branch. She paused and said there is nobody more senior and she is the most senior person there. After some back and forth, it was clear there was zero chance of having a grown up conversation so I ended the phone call. Shurgard if you really record your calls, I suggest you play this one back for training tutorials on how not to speak to clients. Rather than blaming a client for a systematic error, you should have procedures in place to avoid things that your infrastructure can not handle. You should also call clients with outstanding bills rather than going straight to debt collection agencies. The staff at this branch, in particular the person I spoke to at 4.30pm on 11th April 2023 need some serious training on client care, professionalism, and complaints resolution. Honestly, I would give zero stars if could after this exchange. I have never heard anything so ridiculous of blaming a client for systematic deficiencies and then not telling the client your name when they ask for it. This branch needs some serious work. Deptford branch provide exemplary customer service Bow and Grennwich are both excellent too. Herne Hill - Avoid this branch unless they significantly increase their professional standards. MY PREVIOUS REVIEW: Good clean storage facility. I received a call from the branch stating I could not reserve a unit as it's for new customers only. I was a new customer. After a frustrating discussion and visit to the store, it became apparent the staff had mistaken me for another client. Although this was frustrating at the time, it was swiftly resolved once the staff realised their error.
