I was travelling with my partner from East London to the West Country on Boxing Day evening, when she started to have chest pains. I diverted to the nearest hospital, which happened to be the Royal Berkshire. Despite a packed A&E, we were thankfully seen quickly as it turned out she was having a heart attack! The doctor who briefly saw us in A&E told us a cardio team had been called in and that they would fix her up. Incredibly, less than an hour later, she was sitting up in bed, almost as if nothing had happened. They had fitted a stent and she had to stay in the Cardio department for a further 2 1/2 days under observation. The staff in the cardio department were just amazing. One of the nurses phoned my partners daughter periodically through the night to keep her updated and they put up with me being there (even past 8pm) This sort of thing is an extreme shock to both the patient and their loved ones, but the staff were incredibly reassuring and educated us clearly on what we had to do going forward. Well done everybody involved - you deserve a medal and I can't thank you enough.
