    This was a most disappointing respite stay at a well recommended home. I booked my 99 year old mother in for an 18 day stay whilst I went on holiday. Unknown to me, during her stay she ran out of her supply of paper pants. The home then issued her with a pad and some inappropriate string pants. I only realised this when I returned from holiday, picked her up and discovered that she had a pants full when I got her home and into the bathroom, When I subsequently queried this, Rosewood informed that the home does not supply these. When I queried why no one phoned me to alert me to this (or mentioned it when I phoned for an update or to her visitors) so that replacements could be organised, the response was that they thought that I was away (well quite!). Not much imagination/initiative here. Rosewood retaliated by stating that mother was racist. I asked for details of this and was told that ‘there were many instances’. I asked the manager for recorded details and she replied that the file had been closed as mother had been discharged. I asked whether this file could be opened to verify the details (would’ve thought that a click of the mouse should’ve done it). No comment and nothing further. I believe this accusation is nonsense. Mum has had carers at home for a number of years of all shapes, sizes, nationalities and colours and this is has never has arisen. On reflection, Rosewood might consider their accusation a cheap shot/low blow and a swipe at an elderly, vulnerable lady and feel that they are better than this. During mother’s stay the Manager, her Deputy and Medicine’s manager all went off on holiday. It is not for me to tell how a home should schedule its staffing but this absence of senior staff at one time seems a bad idea. I’m sure that those left behind did their best but I feel this situation would have been dealt with more flexibly and imaginatively if there had been more senior staff present. CQC have marked Rosewood as ‘Requiring Improvement in safety and leadership’. We’ll go along with that certainly as regards leadership and would add delegation and communication. Mother will not be returning.
