Ripon Cathedral is not a basilica, but rather a Church of England cathedral with a rich history dating back over 1300 years. It was founded as a monastery by St. Wilfrid in the 7th century and has since been an important center of Christian worship and culture in the North of England. Over the centuries, it has survived wars, fires, and other challenges, and today it continues to serve as a place of prayer, pilgrimage, and community for people of all faiths and backgrounds.

Our clergy are members of the Church of England, which is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. What type of ceremonies or services do you offer for individuals or families?

We offer a variety of services and ceremonies for individuals and families, including baptisms, weddings, funerals, and memorial services. These can be tailored to meet the needs and preferences of each person or group, and can be held in different areas of the cathedral or on its grounds. We also offer regular worship services throughout the week, including Holy Communion, Evensong, and other forms of prayer and reflection.

I ended up in Ripon after visiting Fountain Abbey. Walked down a small street and just around the corner was this absolutely stunning cathedral. Entry is free although they do ask that you buy a £3 permit if you want to take photos. Considering what it must cost to keep this place running, £3 seems very reasonable. Inside there are some stunning stained glass windows and it feels very welcoming. There was a service going on when I visited and the organ music was very dramatic. It's quite tucked away but don't miss the crypt. It's quite creepy and obviously incredibly old!
