This must be one of the best cinema experiences in the country. Although only one screen, it is arranged like a theatre with a ground floor and gallery. All seats are really well spaced out, tables downstairs, comfortable seats in pairs with small tables upstairs. A decent menu of food and drinks is either ready when you arrive, or ordered and delivered to you during the showing. Our first visit, but we have already booked again. Update - still going regularly. Still great! Quiet times are very quiet. Ideal! Recommend the chocolate milkshake. Book a table if you have the fish and chips! Also live events on stage. We have now been many times, and have booked for the Travelling Wilburys next year. Theatre is a little chilly in winter but warm blankets provided so still cosy.

Very disappointed with our latest visit. Have not visited since Covid due to various reasons. First impressions where very hostile with a man in paint covered clothes guarding the entrance not making it clear what was to be done. Was blown away with a £3 booking fee person. Not impressed. As the trailers started there seemed so much commercial adverts unlike becket. Pearl and Dean then all this regal adverts. 45 minutes of adds. And so much chatter from audience. There was probably 1 trailer for another film. After a massive refurb the cinema was feeling tired and not well maintained. The cushions in the seats probably due to be replaced soon. Food was over priced and of poor quality. The worst thing was the sound quality and the screen size. Screen seemed too small for the venue and the sound system was poor. Used to love this place, but seems like it’s being run as a going concern rather looking after and maintaining a historic cinema. Will stick to the Tivoli in future as they are what the regal used to be.

Edit: I'm updating my previous 5-star review, after two bad developments. Here's what I wrote originally, which does basically still stand in terms of the cinema's look and feel: "The highly respectful refurb turned this theatre into a sight to behold. The comfort and space on the mezzanine is unmatched by any cinema I've ever been to." BUT, since then... Firstly, there is the extraordinary introduction of a "venue and booking fee" PER TICKET. Four adults to see a film? That'll be £12 extra just to book?! No. By all means put your prices up transparently if you must, but a per-ticket fee is frankly dishonest. Edit: in response to the reply from Regal - it doesn't matter what you call this fee, the point is you advertise one price per ticket then put a fee on top *per ticket* at the point of completing purchase. Secondly, we attended a film where the sound was atrocious; the cinema knew this before we even went in, but fobbed us off on the way out, and offered zero compensation. This was Dune (2021). We and several other audience members complained about how appalling the audio was, with virtually all the speech really hard to distinguish. We were fobbed off by the staff member in charge on the way out, who blamed it on the film they were sent. No offer of a refund or credit, despite the Regal seemingly already knowing the sound was an issue before we went in (they said something to the effect that other audiences had had the same problem, and that it was some technical issue with the film provided to them...). But the sound with this particular film was not a problem for other cinemas, as far as I could see from googling around after the event. So, whatever weird incompatibility there was between that film and this cinema, the Regal could have cancelled or deferred the showing, or offered us a refund, or something. Instead it was a ruined experience. The cinema seemingly had fore-knowledge that this was the case, yet did absolutely nothing to prevent the bad experience. They just took the money anyway. Edit: in response to the reply from Regal, it was Dune (2021) so sometime then. The sound issue was excruciatingly obvious at the time, multiple groups mentioning/complaining about it and the staff knew as we were leaving exactly what we were going to say... I realise it was a few years ago but obviously since it ruined the screening it puts you off returning. If you have any staff left from the time they must remember this issue with Dune (it wasn't just one bad screening based on what they said as we left it, it was every screening you showed of that film). I'm still giving three stars for the building - and because other customer service there has been fine before, it was only that one fobbing-off incident. But the fear now of another bad-sound event, and the ridiculous booking fee pricing, basically put us off returning entirely.
