i awake to the smell of pine trees and horse droppings. before i lift my eye lids, i can tell i am on a wagon by the rough bumps of the unstable wheels. i open my eyes and see a person sitting opposite me with golden hair and one beside me. my head hurts. i raise my hand to tend to my bruise, or that’s what it feels like anyway, and i see that my hands are bound together by a clump of ropes. “it’s no use, you can’t escape.” says a voice. i raise my head and see the person infront of me looking at me. “you a bandit too?” he asks. “i’d assume your not, by the look of your common clothing.” the soldier in the front of the carriage interrupts us saying “it doesn’t matter if he’s a bandit or not, we found him and he’s joining us.” i have no idea what is happening. all i remember is setting up my camp and cooking my food. i never went to sleep, i never left the camp. these troops must’ve captured me, thought i was a bandit. i had my course set out before me, i had it, and it was taken from me. i could plead for freedom and safe passage to Kensington Palace in London, but i doubt that will work. the nearest town from here is Catterick, not too far but still a fair distance. “there, that’s Portstown. a small town, great towers and forts left by the Romans. they have an impenetrable jail house.” as the wagon draws nearer, the gates open. the man beside me finally speaks, “i have dedicated my life to this clan, and i am willing to die for it.” he turns and looks to me “i’m sorry you’ve been drawn into this, time grows short.” i fear that i won’t be placed into a cell and have a chance to beg for freedom, but rather be executed on arrival. as the wagon rides past the gates, we turn right and see three other wagons lined up. beside them, an execution block. finally, we stop. “out we get lads, you bandits have rejected society and embraced nature. now you are trapped, surrounded by society and will become one with nature.” we all step out, as we have no choice. as my feet touch the ground, i can finally stretch them out, like arriving at your destination after a long ride to your holiday. i turn my head and see the executioner step out of a tower with a great axe, as tall as him. the general steps out behind him, wearing the fur of a bear and pearl white plate armour. “you bandits and rebels have been terrorising our poor county for years on end. we have caught the remaining lot of you and will put you down for good.” he points at the man beside me, the one i sat opposite and says “ you there, step towards the block.” he walks over calmly, not a sign of fear in his eyes. “like a cornered bear” he says whilst kneeling down on the block, “we are most fierce when we have no escape. we are most brave of all.” he rests his head onto the block above the basket. the executioner raised his axe and swiftly drops it to his neck. the head rolls into the basket and his blonde hair has lost its glow. no one shows any fear, aside from me. the general notices this and points at me. i am frozen in fear and two soldiers force me over the the block, i try to resist and try to explain but i am frozen solid; i am consumed by fear. my head falls onto the block and i stare down at the head in the basket. then look at the executioner raising his axe to behead me. “may your death benefit all life” i hear the general say as the axe falls. i try to escape but a soldier’s foot pushing against my back, preventing me from moving. i do not scream but i cry and sweat in the final seconds of my life. i feel a sharp impact for a second on my neck and then: nothing i no longer exist i cannot think i cannot see i cannot smell i cannot breathe i no longer fear i no longer exist i am nothing nothing
