Please find below a summary of my experience, completing a 600+ mile ride with “Bertie” Phil Barley and successfully meeting the Rapid Level 3 Roadmaster standard… Day 1. I had forgotten how blistering progressive Phil was on a motorcycle as I transitioned my concentration and motor skills into the assertive “Red Bull Mode” needed to keep him in sight. We met the other training candidate following the test (disguised as a warm-up) to check I had been practicing the “Rapid Way” of riding. I was not sure what to expect, as the previous two Roadmaster levels had been “mano a mano” with the coach so I was a little concerned at my ability to keep up the other rider, who had vastly more experience than my few years in the saddle. The approach was the same, taking it in turns to lead / follow with stops to reflect, receive and digest the clear recommendations from our leather-clad guru. My pace concerns were soon put to rest as I was able to push my mind, body and machine to a higher level than before whilst bearing a smile like the Cheshire Cat. At midday, we had a welcomed rest and refuel for both man and machine at a scenic biker café on route. We continued to iron-out our weakness with the intention of focusing on consistency for day two. The sunshine and drying roads meant we could make swifter progress through more beautiful roads, most of which I had never ridden before. I cruised home, exhausted, but satisfied I had put in a good shift. Day 2. Wales welcomed us with rain and an opportunity to demonstrate I could maintain similar progress in the wet until we reached Barmouth for lunch. On the return journey, we rode a beautiful road to Bala with more testing twists and switchbacks - applying the same formula to make swift and highly enjoyable progress. I was encouraged to lead and demonstrate all the wealth of learning shared by the coach, resulting in a combination of achievement and exhaustion from riding at such an elevated level of skill. The day was concluded with a final stop at the mid-way café for another swift rest, a brew and the conclusive judgement from the “Man from Del Monte” in a helmet. The positive result was a conclusion of all the regular feedback throughout, and I was delighted with the sense of achievement. Would I recommend Rapid ? Undoubtedly. Learning from the best has been a pleasure and worth every penny. It has taught me to ride to a high standard and at a pace that enables me to ride with far more experienced riders, equipped with powerful sports machines. No more “oh s**t” moments and bundles more enjoyment, whilst enjoying amazing routes. Thank you, Phil and the team, for an amazing experience – I intend to develop my skills further with the Bikemaster module and yearly refreshers to continue to learn to be the best rider I can be.

Just completed my Bikemaster level 2. I was slightly apprehensive about going on track for the first time but was put at ease by my coach. I steadily gained in confidence over the day and felt my riding improve over the day. As with my level one course I had a great couple of days on the road learning from Giles. It doesn’t seem possible for your riding to progress so much in such a short period of time. Giles has a great way of teaching and getting his point across. The combination of drills and spirited demonstration rides do so much to improve your knowledge and confidence. I can’t recommend Rapid enough rather than being taught a rigid system, I have been taught lots of different concepts which allow me to solve my own problems.
