Queue starts by 9am latest every day, opens at 10am. Yeah it’s nuts but it’s the experience waiting in line and the faces of passer-by’s staring at you wondering what the heck you’re doing makes it intriguing. I have to take my hats off to their creativity to generate this hype. At the date of my visit 26/07/2023, standard small ghosts were £9 and large £17.

I went to the York Ghost Merchants today for the second time, this time it was for my 21st birthday so I was hoping to have a perfect experience again as my first experience about 8 months ago was pretty much perfect, however today I asked for a seedling for my 6 year old autistic niece who couldn’t wait in the queue due to her disability and loves her ghost she already has at home that she even sleeps holding it, the woman merchant who was working was very abrupt telling me they only give seedlings to children and I tried to explain why she wasn’t there and show her I wasn’t lying with the picture and she was cutting me off just saying no we can’t, no, only children and the tone of her voice I found to be very rude, at the end of my visit in the shop I explained the situation to a young male merchant working on the till and he was much more understanding and sympathetic, he still explained that I couldn’t have one for her but he seemed so much more empathetic and I appreciate him for this, he explained other options for my two nieces with autism for future visits, so if it wasn’t for this man I would be leaving a one star review, I’m not happy with how the woman spoke to me at all and how she dismissed me. I felt awkward and embarrassed after my encounter with her. What also upset me as well is that lots of people I’m in ghost merchant groups with on Facebook have been gifted seedlings when they’re adults and have no disabilities or anything, the latest one being from the 24th April, baring in mind I bought 7 ghosts today so I thought with the 2 hours I spent in the queue and all the money I spent in the shop, the least they could do would be to gift me a seedling for my niece when this was one of the main reasons for my visit, so this made me feel excluded when they refused to give me one for my autistic neice.

This shop is unique and sells cute little ghosts. However I don’t think it’s worth queuing for hours for this. Unless of course if you are a collector. It seems there’s a hype around this shop because of TikTok and what not. The “experience” of peering through peep holes and pressing buttons doesn’t justify the long wait. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the shop. However, I was underwhelmed by the experience considering I had to queue for 90 minutes.

Today I think was my favourite visit to the shop. I've visited 3 times previously and each time I've been amazed at the selection of ghosts. Today I went with a friend and we got chatting to two of the merchants who were managing the queue. You can feel their passion and love for the business and it's customers, and it makes the long wait in the queue fly by. I can't wait to come back towards the end of the year and say hi to everyone. Thank you all so much.
