My dad left his keys to his mobility scooter at home so luckily we could hire one at powderham, it was too big to go in the castle but we were told he could go in a wheelchair once inside. On approach to the castle it looked quite impressive with beautiful grounds with dear running around. We weren't allowed in until 11am but we were told we could go around the grounds until then. The gardens in front of the castle were nice but not suitable for dad on his scooter to have a look around as there were steps. Looking at the outside of the castle it looked very run down, there were broken windows, rotten window frames and to be honest it looked like a very old run down stately house. When the doors opened at 11 dad was taken around to a side ramp so he could sit in the wheelchair that was there, the tyres were flat so all dad could do was to sit on a chair while the rest of us walked around the castle, dad really didn't miss much as there wasn't many rooms to look in, there was a big dining room, library, music room, hallway leading to a staircase (that we couldn't go up) pantry, kitchen another room with stuffed animals and upstairs an office and that was it !, we left there disappointed and it definitely wasn't wheelchair friendly. We followed the map which took us along a path to an area where you can stroke the animals, again we were disappointed, some of the animals were in very small enclosures, by then we'd had enough and left. I would definitely not return for another visit although I would like to say how lovely the volunteers were with dad and one even sat with him while we had a look around and they clearly love what they do Edit...after reading some reviews it looks like you get to see more of the castle by booking a tour which we didn't know about

My wife & I visited today. The castle & it's history is most interesting. An audio facility is available which informs you about each room. There are also guides in most rooms to answer questions. The audios are told by the owner & his family. Outside there are lovely gardens, a secret garden, a pet farm, & further afield an American garden, pavillion, & belvedere. Well worth a visit. Also members of Historic Houses can visit for free.

Arrived at 11.00am and just had time for a coffee in the Courtney Cafe before a trip round the ground floor before starting a guided tour round the upstairs. A wonderful family home that has had a lot of money invested in making it very opulent and larger over the centuries. The children's farm was interesting but we didn't have the time to look at the American Garden as we trekked up to Belvedere to take in the views across the River Exe and down the estuary. What a shame that the internals of the Grade 2 listed tower had suffered a fire that destroyed the internals.
