Panshanger Aerodrome is Temporarily Closed; the listing as 'closed permanently is incorrect'. It still retains use as an Emergency Landing Ground until it reopens fully. The Aerodrome is subject to the current housing local plan and as such Half of the Aerodrome has been Reserved as an Airfield in that plan. The aerodrome has a rich history and began life as a Relief Landing Ground leading into a Decoy Aerodrome beside a decoy factory (which was a life size version of Hatfield Aerodrome). The part that remains today is the original decoy aerodrome. During WWII the Princes of the Netherlands and Bosnia were at Panshanger as well as King George VI and the Duke of York. Geoffrey de Havilland crash landed the Prototype Mosquito (aka the wooden wonder) at Panshanger where it was rebuilt before flying out. 4800 personnell (a mix of Sargeant Pilots and Pilot Officers) were trained at Panshanger during the war years in de Havilland Tiger Moths. Across the valley the S.O.E were making Torpex explosives and used a laberinth of underground light gauge railway tunnels to all the main S.O.E mansion house bases which was then funnelled out to each S.O.E Training School. The underground railway was also used to ferry S.O.E Agents heading to France to be collected by Lysander aircraft from Panshanger Aerodrome (aka Holwell Hyde) and parachuted in (behind enemy lines in occupied territory). The explosive used to destroy the nazi's heavy water plant, was Torpex. The S.O.E (Special Operations Executive) had a strong connection to the area around Panshanger as the inventions for use in active service were named after the local area 'Welwyn Garden City' namely the 'Welbike' (collapsable motorcycle) and the 'Welrod' (Silencer styled single shot gun). Post war the SK1 2 seater 322mph short jet was designed by the team of Somers and Kendall. The intention was to mass produce the jet at Panshanger Aerodrome in the long London Aeroplane hangar. The jet suffered with undercarriage problems and did not go in to production, though test flights had been carried out. There are many stories and pieces of history attached to Panshanger Aerodrome and I am sure when it reopens this rich history will not be forgotton. In its modern heyday the North London Flying School had 16000 members and put on regular activities for the youth; schools cadets and the community were involved with open days and annual events. There were regular flying events and seasonal non flying events. Aircraft Sports were at this aerodrome and the youth were very much a part of that. Fireworks nights were awesome. Classic cars. Classic fly-ins. World and UK Aerobatic displays were carried out at Panshanger. All ages of people and cars and planes were welcomed at Panshanger Aerodrome. There still remains 3 Blast Shelters and an underground Air-Raid Shelter on the perimeter (from WWII). Few aerodromes had such a great sense of peace as did Panshanger Aerodrome. My personal score for Panshanger Aerodrome is 10/10.

I had a trial lesson bought as a birthday treat. As I'd never done anything like this before, I was pleased to find the staff very friendly, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. They put me at ease very quickly. I'm more than happy to recommend North London Flying School based at Panshanger Aerodrome for anyone interested trying out a flying experience or working towards a PPL.
