We had our boat painted by Chris and Chris last Autumn (2021). They did a fantastic job, stripping the boat back to bare metal, and dealing with any rust. They then applied traditional multiple coats of paint. They also took on other issues like replacing the stove collar and flue. We were kept informed of progress all the time, and even visited a few times to examine progress and agree which section was painted which colour. The finish is superb and we have had many compliments as we have cruised the cut. I would also like to mention their signwriter who was amazing. I mocked up our sign from the internet and he just painted it there and then with fantastic results.

The friend who recommended Chris Weston and Oxon Boat Painting Company told me, as we dropped Coquí off in Brinklow, that she was in good hands, and she was not wrong. We are absolutely delighted with the incredible quality of the work. Our Elton Moss narrowboat Coquí was in something a sorry state when she arrived for her new paint job, having been moored beneath trees since 2011, but she is now a thing of beauty. Part of what made the project such a success was the vision that Chris had for it right from the start. We arrived with a not-fully-fledged notion that we wanted a bright yellow-green boat (a coquí is a type of Puerto Rican tree frog, so frog, green...), a dark contrasting colour and also some bright accents. We knew that we wanted the Taino coquí symbol somewhere on the sides, and did sketches with a medium-sized coquí centred on the cabin in quite a traditional manner. Given this information, Chris suggested that we go big with the symbol, and tilt it, almost as if it had been stamped onto the boat from above. We loved this notion, and as the process went on, we took this attitude and ran with it, asking Chris if he could put some other symbols on the roof. I sent more vector graphics. We left the placement of these four up to him, and they’re just perfect. Chris waited patiently while we got our heads around the available colour charts and finally settled on Citrine for the main colour, Traffic Grey B for contrast and Pure Orange for the accents. The technical quality of the painting is superb; Coquí arrived with peeling paint, rust patches, algae and too-coarse anti-slip grit on the roof which had to be completely removed. The side hatches had only ever been primed, never painted. The wooden doors on the back deck were in the process of disintegrating, so Chris found us a craftsman to not only make two new doors but also carve the Taino symbols into them - they’re fabulous. The result of all this care and attention is a truly stunning boat. Whenever questions arose, Chris was in contact right away so we could discuss options - did we want the rusted rear lockers treated and painted, did we mind losing a bit of epoxy at the back so we could have our orange stripe painted etc. He showed me exactly what the satin finish would look like on another boat, and how the anti-slip grit would be much finer than what we had previously. What seemed initially a very daunting undertaking turned out to be an enjoyable process that produced a great result. We could not be more pleased that we chose Oxon Boat Painting Company.

It’s the invisible stuff that makes Chris Weston such good value We’ve just taken our boat back after painting by Chris Weston. Based on our experience, from quotation through conversations and regular photos as the work progressed, to final handover, we highly recommend Chris Weston (Oxon Boat Painting). Here’s why. From the moment we found his incredibly helpful quotation form online, we knew Chris would be a master of detail and thoroughness. We sought a range of quotes: one firm wanted to charge us to visit our mooring, two others took a look at our boat and gave overall quotations. But Chris visited without charge, took two hours to inspect the boat with great care, talk through our requirements in detail and explain carefully his approach to creating a gleaming finish with a very long life. He followed this up with a detailed quotation covering all aspects of the work. Other suppliers suggested 4-6 years as the time before a next repaint, and indeed on two previous occasions that’s just how long our finish lasted. This time round we wanted a really excellent long-lasting result. As with any decorating job, it’s the care and painstaking attention to detailed preparation work that produces the best result over time. The difficult thing is that none of this is ever seen, and is hard to assess when comparing prices. Chris was by no means the cheapest quote. But he was without doubt extremely thorough because of the serious work he and his excellent team did before applying the final, high quality finish. Chris took extra effort to get right into the corners of rusting around the window frames, he drilled right into those awkward areas of rust concern (foredeck, lockers etc), and made sure everything was replaced in a better condition than before. At every stage he kept us informed with a steady flow of photos so we now have a full record of the work that was done. He was prepared to check, meticulously, every aspect of our requirement, helping us achieve the excellent quality of finish we hoped for. The signwriting is elegant and his renovation on the brasswork (mushrooms, portholes, fairleads) provides an extra sparkle. We are thrilled with the final appearance of our 21 year old boat, but most of all we are left with the strong sense that this paintwork really will last, and Chris will be there to advise and support us if we need. To say we’re impressed would be an understatement.
