We were sold a free cavity wall insulation service, promoted apparently by Derby City Council for large 15-20 year homes to reduce emissions. At no time did the salesman or the surveyor warn us that the service actually requires dozens of 22mm wide holes drilled every few bricks the height and width of every external wall of your home. No one told us that the workmen obviously cannot guarantee to blend the make good mortar perfectly nor that many bricks won't be chipped or cracked during the process. Had I not asked them to leave before they started, they would have defaced my relatively new home. Please don't get me wrong, this is a legitimate company. The workmen are polite, friendly and professional. They are absolutely not cowboys, they are just doing a job that some people might want. In fairness to them, as soon as I complained about a lack of prior information, they immediately apologised. But my advice is they need to be more upfront with customers, particularly concerning young properties because otherwise, I would not use this service unless you know exactly beforehand what is going to be done to your home, even if it's free.
