The terse greeting of “Have you booked?”, followed by the slap on a vacant table as our receiver retreated to the kitchen, should have warned us that all was not going to be well on this, our latest and last visit to the Cheese Loft, but we endured in the hope of tasty food in pleasant surroundings, accommodating about a dozen tables. Our order was eventually taken by our greeter and after the “We don’t having any of that left” reply to a couple of requested items, we settled for 2 cheese soups and 2 teas. The teas arrived after 10 minutes, but 25 minutes later, with the soups still not delivered and after the rapidly cooling teas had been consumed, we left, offering to pay for our drinks en route. A different lady, one of at least five who were working, was both embarrassed and apologetic as we explained our departure, and claimed we had somehow been overlooked. Our table was literally in the middle and passed by every server as they moved around, so that is either not accurate or a gross dereliction, but I suspect that the chorus of apologies for the long wait, given to other customers as their baked potatoes and pie and peas were delivered, suggests that something has gone amiss at the Cheese Loft. This may have been a bad day at the office, but the ownership need to quickly reappraise themselves with the importance of good service otherwise more of the regular customer base, are going to vote with their feet.
