The ‘New’ St Lawrence Church, to distinguish it from the ruined Old St Lawrence Church nearby, was consecrated in 1779. The church was commissioned by Sir Lionel Lyde and designed by architect Nicolas Revett; the latter being co-author of The Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece. Revett had visited Greece to study its architectural heritage; one of the sources of inspiration for this church may have been the Temple of Apollo on the island of Delos. At one end pavilion is an urn under which Sir Lionel is buried and at the other end pavilion, under another urn lies his wife. Allegedly an indication of their unhappy marriage. The design is remarkable for the 1770s and is a telling demonstration of the dictatorial powers of Georgian land-owning gentry. According to Historic England, construction was financed with profits from the slave trade. The building has been Grade I listed since the 1960s.

We visited just to explore, see the church and have a walk through nature. We weren't disappointed, a lovely, quaint little village with some beautiful scenery in the middle of nowhere but only a short drive from home. We walked through the fields along the footpaths with the sheep, and back along a bridle path to the High Street. Lovely buildings with an olde worlde pub and an old red London telephone box
