Isolated and unspoilt corner of South lakes. Sadly under threat from the proximity of a 450 Lodge development on the already inadequate entrance road.

You will find Sandscale Haws, a National Trust managed site, at the end of some tiny, country roads, meaning finding it is a challenge. Once you are there, you will be see the wide open sands and coastal dunes that mark the end of the Duddon valley estuary system. The area is a strong hold of the Natterjack toad, a high priority conservation species. Many scrapes & pools have been created in the dune systems to support this species. Being an estuary, you can expect a wide range of coastal birds to visit the area too. The National Trust provides a small info centre (not open all the time), small, tarmacked car park (pay & display in operation) and there are some, old (but perfectly OK) toilets for public use too. It is a popular area for locals to walk their dogs, the only negative being the amount of dog poo around (which someone has taken objection too and started spraying each one with multi-coloured, highlighting paint - not sure which is worse?). A must visit site for Natterjacks and other wildlife or if you like big, open sandy coastal systems.

Great car park and access to the beach. I didn’t see any Natterjack toads but they are there some of the year.
