An excellent museum of York's ancient and medieval history and archaeology, surrounded by beautiful gardens. I spent an absorbing two and a half hours here while on a day trip. Paid £9.50 adult admission (it's £4.75 for a child), and the ticket is valid for a year. The young lady at the reception desk was very welcoming and took the time to let me know where all the different exhibitions are. The ground floor galleries are mainly devoted to pre-Roman and Roman history and are filled with beautiful pottery, stonework, jewellery and everyday artefacts. Some interesting skeletons too, especially the one of a young woman surrounded by the jewellery that was buried with her. Loved the beautiful mosaic floor, which you are allowed to walk on so long as you take off your shoes. The artefacts in the downstairs Viking and medieval galleries are every bit as interesting. But I was especially impressed with the Jurassic exhibition. Amazing to look upon the gigantic skeletons of an ichthyosaur and two plesiosaurs, and then to lift an iPad and see them magically come to life and roaming the ancient seas! All the galleries are full of interesting and easy to read info, and there are opportunities to dress up in period clothes and lots of interactive fun for kids. No café but there are clean toilets in the basement, and a nice gift shop. Would have liked to spend even longer here. A must-see for anyone who loves history.
