I hired a car from this branch of National Car Rental in August 2021. In terms of booking the car, picking up the car, using the car and returning the car, everything went pretty much perfectly. The reason I am scoring only two stars is because of what happened afterwards. A few days after I returned the car, I received an email from National saying that the vehicle had been damaged. The email included a photo showing a mark on the boot of the car. I immediately replied to this email explaining that I had not caused any damage to the car whatsoever. I mentioned that I had jet washed the car with my brother at his house immediately before making the short journey back to Birmingham Airport to return the car. The mark shown in the photo was definitely something that my brother and I would have noticed when we were cleaning it. No incidents occurred during my drive back to the airport. As such, the car was returned in the same condition that I had collected it - damage-free. I stated in my reply email that any damage to the car must have been caused by a member of their staff, perhaps when they were moving it from the parking spot where I left it to the place where they examined it. Remarkably, in the next email I received from National, they acknowledged this as a possibility stating "I am not indicating the damage was caused personally by you". Regardless, they proceeded to charge me over £400 for 'repairs' anyway. One thing I should mention here is that when I was picking up the car, the lady who served me asked if I wanted to take out some kind of insurance to cover the excess if the vehicle got damaged. When I said "No", her reaction was odd. (I was tempted to use the word 'suspicious' here but I think that would be going too far. Therefore, I've used 'odd'. It was as if I had committed some kind of faux pas by saying "No" to her insurance offer.) On a personal level, this experience was especially frustrating because National have always been my preferred car rental company. I used them regularly throughout my 10 years spent in the British Army, during which time I did a lot of travelling, and they were always great On this occasion I turned down cheaper car rental companies specifically because I wanted to use National. Sadly, as a result of this experience I won't be using them again.

I wish more National rental sites were like this! Super friendly staff; when I found out that the car they'd picked for me might need an engine oil replacement soon; they tried to upgrade me to a bigger car, and when I decided I didn't want that, let me pick a different one and rushed off to get it washed. And then threw in a free tank of petrol, too.
