FAQ
What are the qualifications and experience levels of your instructors?
Our instructors are all certified by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and have extensive experience in sailing. They hold a variety of qualifications, ranging from RYA Dinghy Instructor to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore. We ensure that our instructors are knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about teaching sailing to students of all levels. What is the student-to-instructor ratio in your classes?
Our student-to-instructor ratio varies depending on the type of class, but we always strive to keep class sizes small to maximize individual attention. For our beginner dinghy courses, we have a maximum ratio of 6 students to 1 instructor. For our more advanced courses, such as yachtmaster coastal and offshore, we have a maximum ratio of 4 students to 1 instructor. What type of boats do you use for instruction?
We have a wide range of boats for instruction, including dinghies, keelboats, and yachts. Our dinghies include popular models such as the Laser Pico and RS Quest, while our keelboats include the J80 and Dehler 36. For our yacht courses, we use a range of yachts, including the Bavaria 38 and the Beneteau Oceanis 37.What safety protocols do you have in place?
Safety is our top priority at Mylor Sailing School. All students are required to wear lifejackets while on the water, and our instructors are trained in first aid and rescue procedures. We also monitor weather conditions closely and will cancel classes if conditions are deemed unsafe. In addition, all our boats are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure they are in top condition. What is your cancellation policy for classes and what happens in case of bad weather?
For cancellations made by the student, we require a minimum of 48 hours notice for dinghy and keelboat courses, and 7 days notice for yacht courses. If a cancellation is made within these timeframes, we will do our best to reschedule the class, but we cannot guarantee availability. In the event of bad weather, we reserve the right to cancel classes for safety reasons. If we cancel a class, we will offer a full refund or the option to reschedule for another date.Reviews

Completed an RYA Level 2 Power Boat with Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School. The instructor was very thorough, knowledgeable, and friendly. It was a good balance between theory and practical. Would recommend.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Tracey who arranged my recent Rya sailing courses answering all my questions and putting me at ease. Having now completed 3 courses with the Mylor team, I'm looking forward to booking my next one. Matt has instructed me through all of my courses, he has a wealth of sailing knowledge and a calm way of teaching (feed the fish!) This is all done in the most amazing location with a selection of different boats to try. Thanks again to the Mylor team

Booked a two day RYA sailing course with my son in mid September. I can honestly say it was the best 2 days I've had on the water for ages. Our instructor (Ian) was brilliant — expert and engaging, he had us sailing all points of the wind, tacking and gybing confidently in no time, working up to man overboard, capsize drills, sailing on to mooring buoys etc. Professional, helpful, friendly and well equipped. cannot recommend more highly.

I am very pleased to have enrolled my grandson (8) on RYA Youth Courses 1 & 2 with Mylor Sailing School. My grandson was full of energy and enthusiasm on our way home in the car afterward. He loved capsizing and controlling the boat. He said teacher was "a bit bossy" but that's no bad thing. Today, after school we tested each other on our knowledge of knots, he remembered all he was taught.
