I find the story of Mrs Booth fascinating! When Joseph Mallord William Turner went to Margate to paint, it was with Mrs Booth that he chose to stay. Her first husband had drowned at sea and they began a love affair in 1833. They lived as Mr and Mrs Booth, with Mrs Booth supporting Turner financially until his death. The site of Mrs Booth's former lodgings is now occupied by the Turner Contemporary Gallery. In this sculpture Mrs Booth is portrayed as a scaled-up version of the tiny shell lady ornaments that are still sold in the Margate seafront souvenir shops. Nevertheless the artist, Ann Carrington, shows her to be a strong woman, looking out to the sea and sky so beloved by Turner.
