I completed a beginners course here earlier this year. This school really focuses on learning characters mainly. The teacher I had she teaches in a very old fashion way, if you don’t do homework she will make you feel really bad about it! In my class she was not interested why everyone was learning the language, she was more focused on finishing the book on time, even if some of us couldn’t keep up..... The Friday practicing class is very good, the older gentleman teacher is very patient. I wish he was teaching the beginners lesson, I would have made a much better progress! My overall recommendation if you want to focus on leaning speaking (as a priority) over writing& reading than choose a different school or ask to a trial lesson before committing to a course.

I have been studying at Meridian Chinese now for nearly 3 months and so far am very impressed with the classes. The materials provided are well structured and the class sizes are small which gives us plenty of opportunity to practice speaking. Since starting the course I feel we have made significant progress in learning how to write the HSK1 characters and comprehending the subsequent sentences. Overall, I really enjoy the teaching style and can highly recommend!

Meridian Chinese is a great school to learn with, I have been learning Mandarin for a year and a half with them and my progress has come a long way. The classes they offer are very progressive and structured, towards the learning of characters & grammar and development in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The staff and class room environment is very friendly and enjoyable. The structure of the course combined with self study provides a great foundation and a guided learning path to learn Mandarin.

I am studying here at the HSK level 1 evening course for reading and writing Mandarin Chinese characters. Although I am already familiar with some of the characters, my tone recognition and memory for writing the characters was not good. Also I confuse similar-looking characters. I've found that with David Su Liqun's method I am recalling the tones and characters with considerably better accuracy. This is achieved through: Interesting in-class discussion of the radicals making up the character, giving the lines meaning. Sketches in the accompanying course book of the radicals (the book was actually written by the teacher) Mnemonics (sayings or rhymes to drill home the character) Out-loud vocal repetition with the tutor Testing on a weekly basis helps pace the course and sets the freshly-learned characters I think dividing up the characters into manageable sections in A-Z order helps a lot. Learning is supplemented by: -At-home repetition of writing characters -Self-testing via a dictionary app (Pleco) -A homework club with my classmates compliments the studies The teacher is very encouraging and the rapid pace of the course helps to to learn a lot in a short time.

I haven't tried any other place in London and, there's no reasons for me to do so. Classes are small which helps with learning. It is all headed by a very motivated teacher. I'm there twice a week and, it's totally worth it. I can see huge progress within a couple of months. I won't lie though.. Learning Chinese does require a lot of study time at home. Two hours of class do require about two hours of home study over the week.

Good teaching method of starting with a limited quantity of vocabulary and phrases and using repeatedly so they stick in your mind. Also good for teaching characters. However I did not like the teaching method of encouraging fast reading without understanding. But generally a very good introduction to mandarin.
