The Tai Chi class takes place in Addison primary school's main hall which is a nice room with high ceilings and large windows. There are normally about 16 to 20 students, sometimes more sometimes less. The class is a complete cross section of male female, old young, experienced and novice. Sessions are a mixture of whole class activities and group activities focused on level of experience. There are enough coaches so that everyone gets tuition and guidance corresponding to their level. Everything is relaxed and friendly. I started about 15 weeks ago and have got to about step 8 of the 24 step Tai Chi Short Form. I really enjoy it and wonder why I didn't do it years ago.

I studied karate for many years but injury forced me to stop. I wanted the discipline confidence and fitness provided by a martial art. I also wanted the equivalent of what are katas in karate but in tai chi are the form. These essentially oriental ways of practising are sequences of martial movements. Initially I found tai chi very difficult. It has many subtleties that take time dedication and extensive practise to appreciate. Tai chi builds strength balance coordination and calm. Like other oriental martial arts it instils respect courtesy politeness and the building of character. The classes at Shepherds Bush are sociable and amusing but they require effort and application. Each time I train my body feels different and I realise a new subtlety to the movements. Tai chi also has an aesthetic which I particularly enjoy. Usually a profound gem in each class to go away and think about.

I was looking for something which was going to help my flexibility and balance, and which could offer a way to be more grounded. So I picked Qi Gong and started attending these classes a year ago. What I really like is that it increases your spiritual, mental and physical strength by slowing down and working on yourself through breathing and movement. The classes are always enjoyable - we have a great music mix which gets me in the zone, and the teaching is spot on.

I've been going here about six months and I absolutely love it. I didn't know much about tai chi before I started, but I've had a few serious injuries over the years and was looking for something to keep my body active. My image of tai chi was old people in the park waving their hands around, but there is so much more to it. It is a proper martial art, and every movement in the 'form' has a number of different applications. It really would take a lifetime to get close to getting everything out of it. What I hadn't expected is that is not only good exercise for your body, but your mind also gets a good stretching what with everything to remember and think about, and it is possible to have a really tiring workout, or to take it gently if you want to.

I have been learning Qi Gong and Tai Chi here for three years and for me it has been an amazing experience. My health has improved and I feel stronger, physically and mentally. Classes are friendly, and open to all levels, as we divide into groups. This meant that when I started as an absolute beginner, I could start learning the basics along with other fellow beginner students, but also get inspired and learn from more senior students when mixing with the other groups and working all together. What I personally like most about this class is that I am constantly inspired to improve myself, not only in my moves and technique, but also as a person.
