Material Moves is an Aladdin's cave for dressmakers and fabric collectors. This shop has an amazing selection of fabrics for all occasions, which is so hard to find these days. Having just finished a 3 day workshop Focus on Fit with Carol I have a calico toile of a dress pattern which fits me with all my lumps and bumps. With this I will be able to make it in a variety of fabrics, changing the neck line and sleeve lengths for different looks. What a gem of a place - GBSB here I come!

I've also enjoyed sewing but felt frustrated that the fit wasn't quite right. I joined Carol's one day pattern adjusting course and came away with a full set of body measurements and some understanding of what I need to do to adjust patterns particularly the tricky bust area! I'm now ready to start sewing again after a break of 8 years. Carol has a beautiful shop and lovely fabrics and patterns too.

Just wanted to share my experience of the ‘Make a pattern fit’ workshop at Material Moves in Scarborough. It was brilliant! Having sewn on and off for many years, curtains, cushions and occasional clothes, I always had doubts about measuring myself correctly when using a dressmaking pattern, often with less than satisfactory results. Carol’s workshop yesterday turned me in a new direction, boosting my knowledge of body shape and how to make a careful assessment of measurements, in order to make small adjustments to a pattern, so that the garment actually fits. We started the day, 3 women plus teacher in a bright and airy newly refurbished workshop, upstairs above her shop, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. First up we made a list of 27 body measurements, some I’d never even heard of! Through this slow and meticulous process we were able to ask questions and Carol brought her personal and professional experiences to clearly explain, sometimes using her unfinished projects hanging in the room, to demonstrate her point. In the afternoon, we carefully went through the patterns we’d brought, to apply our new skills. Again the session was relaxed with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Carol’s enthusiasm for sewing is infectious, coming from her lifetime’s passion for it culminating in her professional qualifications and vast experience in teaching and textiles, bringing a personalised relaxed and satisfying learning experience! I have no hesitation in highly recommending this workshop.

I have had the pleasure of one to one pattern fitting training with Carol at Material Moves. I brought along projects that I was having difficulties with and we were able to go through the individual issues and find solutions to enable the projects to move forward. I now have a comprehensive range of body measurements I can use. We were able to compare these to a whole range of patterns so I could see what routine adjustments I would need to obtain that perfect fit. The setting is welcoming and bright with excellent facilities. First rate workshop delivered by a skilled and competent expert. Carol has a great selection of fabrics on site, so have come away with additional projects to work on. A great investment.
