I used to live locally to the Marwell Hotel, so have known of it for many years, but only recently had cause to stay. My room was probably the furthest from reception that it could have been, and there was no phone in the room, so I had to return to reception with any questions and to ask for additional toiletries etc. On entering the room, there was a musty smell, so I opened all the windows to get some fresh air through... surely housekeeping should have picked up on this? The Earl Grey tea I'd asked for (and been told would be no problem) was not supplied, the TV remote control did not work, the power sockets by the bed looked dangerous, and the shower curtain did not reach the top of the bath, so water dripped all over the floor. Given all that, I wasn't expecting much from the dinner... the hotel wasn't busy, and the service was slow. I was very surprised that there was no Sauvignon Blanc available, and it took ages for my dinner to arrive. When it did though, it was delicious... but unfortunately it was not quite enough to balance out a number of negatives. Overall, the hotel is tired, and I get the feeling that it rather rubs off on the attitude of the staff. I heard a manager talking with a maintenance person and given the nature of their conversation, I'm not surprised that there were so many problems in my room. There seemed to be no pride in working there. It's a shame as it could be really something!
