One of the better kept stations, not only on the Mayflower Line, but throughout Essex. Planters along the platforms brighten the place with colourful flowers during all but the coldest months. The tiny red-brick, generic, Victorian era railway station also benefits from it's location aside the watermeadows meandering towards Dedham Vale & Flatford. In fact, the station itself is actually located in Lawford, something to bear in mind if your destination is actually Manningtree town, because that's a mile walk east. Because of the vicinity of so-called 'Constable Country', Manningtree Station receives many tourists intending to walk from there into Dedham or Flatford villages. As well as being a stop on the mainline between Ipswich & Colchester, Manningtree also serves as the main interchange station for the Mayflower Line, (terminating @ Harwich town, another local tourist destination). Because this branchline is also a Freightliner track to Parkeston & the Haltermann Carless refinery, there's quite a complex junction & points system leading into Manningtree Station. From overhead this creates a distinctive triangular junction of tracks, quite a rare railway arrangement. An Amazon Hub Locker is accessible from the platform, opposite the toilet block door. The main platform has a notice board about local places to visit, as well as the true story of The Escaped Nun. The story of Margaret Mary Moult may sound stranger than fiction, but in 1909 she really did do a runner from the Old Hall Convent in East Bergholt, ending up at the station, but with no cash for the fare to London. The Station Master put her on the guard's van of early milk train, & earnt himself a moment of fame when the Escaped Nun's story hit the national tabloids. In the novel, Gallowglass, (by Ruth Rendall), the central character, Sandor, is finished off by the author, through committing suicide by jumping from the platform at Manningtree, into the path of the non-stop, Norwich to London express...
