On the outset, Malta is beautiful, but it doesn’t take very long to notice that something rotten lies beneath. It is a country bridled in corruption (just go on youtube), and you get a real sense of it at every instance as a tourist. Vendors, agents and shady businessmen are the order of the day, and you get the sense that you are in lawless territory because you are completely at the mercy of these swindlers who give you the impression that they answer to no one, which in my opinion is a failure of the Maltese tourism authority to act as a regulatory governing body. Another observation- the aging Maltese populace to me especially are generally primitive and vulgar compared to their young and highly educated Maltese counterparts. Its an interesting country unlike any other I’ve been to, but it still has a *long* way to go before it can catch up to some of the more prominent tourist destinations in Europe.
