I purchased two lots from an online auction. The catalogue and condition reports were detailed and accurate. The lots I won were excellent in both quality and value for money. Staff were polite and helpful. Good experience all round.

NICE, BUT CAVEAT EMPTOR - I like smaller auction houses and Mallams is a good example; small house that punches somewhat above its weight. The branch in Cheltenham has quite modest premises and overall a good quality of stuff. I would just occasionally question their expertise though (I’m not impugning their honesty). For example, in April 2014 Chinese sale a 'kylin' or ‘mythical beast’- form censer ( think we'd now probably recognise it as a luduan beast) catalogued as 17thC bronze [lot 657] sold for £320. Exactly a year later it was back in for sale again, this time catalogued as bronze, 18th/19thC [lot 253] and failed to sell. In August of that year it was offered again, relegated to a ‘decorative interiors’ sale, same cataloguing, and this time made £170. I was very sorry to have missed it on those occasions because I had one – an identical one, because they were a repro ‘line’, or perhaps even this particular one – in the 1970s. I bought it at Liberty's department store. And not only was it not old, but it was made of iron. Finally in June 2021 (Chinese Works of Art, lot 476), again catalogued as 18th/19thC bronze, I got it. A nostalgic moment. It also felt nostalgic putting a magnet near it, and having it jump and stick “Kerchung!”. I find it slightly extraordinary that a late 20thC repro obviously made of ferrous metal could be catalogued as old bronze in four sales, and I also wonder why it kept coming back (did people complain?). Anyway, I’m delighted to have been reunited with it at last, so it goes to show there’s a buyer for everything.
