We are currently living in the second house MAKAR have designed and built for us. As we had outgrown the first property after 10 years, we commissioned Neil Sutherland and his team to design and build us our forever home in 2015. It was a pleasure to work with MAKAR, we knew exactly what we wanted, they listened, communicated, delivered the house at the agreed price and on schedule! We live in a light, bright, peaceful, beautifully designed open plan house with maximum solar gain and minimal heating costs. MAKAR are the experts when it comes to building innovative sustainable homes……we know this, we went back for another one!

We have been living in our Makar House for 2 years now and love it! The house is always cosy, easily heated and as economical as today's fuel prices will allow. There is really nothing we would change about the design of the house. Makar did a great job in designing and building our wee retirement home. I would reccommend them to anybody.

Makar built our house in 2013/2014. It is a lovely well-built wood frame house which met our requirements to make the most of the view. We had a limited budget and Makar managed to stay pretty well within that. There were some small issues that needed sorting after completion and even after a year's snag period and these were addressed. Communication was sometimes a problem but we understand there were staff issues. Overall we would recommend them for a house, especially if you want something different and environmentally friendly. In August 2017 I approached Makar to build me a house. It was the worst financial and emotional decision of my life. Regrettably I believed that a builder of sustainable homes would be ethical and considerate – and even good value for money. Initially things appeared to go well – it was only later that I discovered I had paid 50% more per m2 than my neighbours whose house (with similar features) was completed a year before mine but on time and with visits from the architect to ensure they were happy. Due to lack of imagination from the Makar architect I borrowed the neighbours’ kitchen layout to make better use of light and space. Makar’s workforce is slapdash – the wetwall around my bath doesn’t fit, the shower head is below the level of my own, the other shower doesn’t work properly, the shower door was delivered eighteen months late (and fitted bent!), the roof was defective and the soffits stained, the external window ledges don’t protect from water ingress (one has been blown off by the wind five times), opening windows in the kitchen can’t be opened by normal humans (and are more expensive and let in less light), screwheads show through the taping, the paintwork shows brushstrokes and is incomplete, the stove wasn’t fitted by a HETAS engineer and there are holes in the walls and ceilings. The sitting room overheats in the summer for which there is an easy remedy. During the build Neil Sutherland realised the stove flue would have to go through the roof so one of the PV panels was removed. In the summer of 2022 I discovered that thousands of pounds I had paid to Makar had not been sent to the suppliers of the doors and windows. Curiously I was given an outward opening front door (I was never consulted directly on the design) which I was told was ‘an advance’ particularly in a house with low heat loss. But for the Passive house Makar built subsequently the front door opens inwards! The door firm Vividdoors gives four reasons why outward opening doors are a bad idea. There is more… Neil Sutherland has been reluctant to fix any of this in five years – except in an email marked ‘without prejudice’. Work required for my completion certificate has not been carried out and Building Control tells me I can be evicted. My advice is - find someone competent who takes a pride in their work.

We built a house with Makar Ltd. Inverness in 2020. Since than we've had a few issues, After a few challenges in the past we got it all resolved with Makar Ltd. in 2023 and they seem to have gotten their team back on track and doing a good job. Main thing is the communication has become better and they take their after service more seriously. I'm more confident that Makar will stand at our side for any future issues which lie in the guarantee range, but I doubt we'll have any more than that fault in the roof which is now fixed. All in all it's a solid build, passive house style with great energy efficiency.

We chose MAKAR as a Highland based business who have experience designing AND building energy efficient homes. All with local timber and natural materials. Our home was built in the Inverness factory/workshop, assembled and completed externally by MAKAR who provided an efficient, professional service. We completed the internal fit out ourselves and are now enjoying a beautifully designed, warm and efficient home. Especially at this time of the year! Thanks again to everyone at MAKAR Homes.
