The boat was lovely and the food was amazing. The reason for only 3 stars is the boat was delayed by 24 hours due to high winds and concern that we wouldn’t clear the sides of the Caledonian canal. This meant that the rest of the schedule was rushed with the boat arriving late into ports when all the shops had shut, no time to explore some of the promised islands or visit the whiskey distillery. It was made worse by the removal of the tour guide on the second day due to illness and no replacement being provided which meant we had no one pointing out which islands we were passing or giving us local information on coach trips eg to castles. The manager of the boat did her best but it was a very expensive ‘cruise of a lifetime’ for my husband and I and it fell short of what was promised. Just be aware that the schedule can and probably will deviate from what’s promised.

It was about 5 years ago when I travelled on The Lord of the Glens. I was wondering about the schedule of its new sister ship and noticed that there are only two Google reviews. The discrete attentiveness of the staff, the superb 30's style of the boat itself, the slightly quirky day trips and wonderful slightly idiosyncratic evening entertainment - all wonderfully thought out. No other holiday I have been on has been anywhere near as memorable!

Highly recommend Lord of the Glens cruise on the Caledonian Canal in the Highlands of Scotland. My mother and I loved it! The ship is comfortable, well kept, and beautifully outfitted. The size is perfect, sufficient for only about 54 passengers; it never feels overcrowded or busy or loud. In addition, the size creates a sense of receiving undivided, personalized service from the crew, as they do not have to split their attention among too many passengers. The crew (Brian, David, Eamon, the captain, everyone) are amazingly friendly, helpful, informative, personable, and professional. After day 1, they knew who you were, greeted you warmly with familiarly, and met your every need. The chef and kitchen staff prepared three delicious multiple-course meals daily (meat, fish, and vegetarian options for lunches and dinners; ingredients procured fresh daily at each port stop). They also did an admirable job meeting unique dietary restrictions/needs. The rooms are sufficient size, comfortable, and store large luggage easily. The soap, shampoo, and conditioner are local products and quite lovely. Shower is compact but workable. The cruise couldn’t have been in a more perfect location in the Highlands—scenic beauty everywhere you look. The cruise progresses at an even and relaxed pace, allowing time to take it all in as well as to capture it all on film. Port stops also allow for ample time to explore, shop, take tea or whiskey, etc. Scotland was true to form weatherwise; sometimes raining, sometimes partly cloudy, sometimes clear and sunny, and always windy—and always comfortable and inviting inside the ship. The Lord of the Glens is a wonderful way to see 100+ miles of Scotland!
