A fantastic community for those who would like improve their public speaking skills! I have been a member for about three months now and have found the weekly opportunities to both speak and serve as a functionary very useful. It gives members lots of time on stage to practice and gain valuable experience. I would highly recommend checking out this club if you would like to improve your public speaking skills and meet some awesome people!

Well, there is a lot to say for this club. It’s one of the first clubs, probably the first, for which I attended the meetings. It is totally run by volunteers for members. It is quite welcoming to all new members as well as the guests, just like my old club in Turkey was. Having weekly meetings can be a bit demanding, but it’s also great to improve oneself even faster. I always feel the Toastmasters clubs as “right to the point” places. If one wants to improves one’s public speaking and leadership skills, Toastmasters is the place to go. As for new people, I’d recommend that you guys first do your part by attending to each and every meeting, either in person or online. Then take roles. Spend time and effort to make the maximum from your membership. Only then you’ll realise that you did the right thing by joining in. You’re always welcome to drop by and make us happy with your presence.

Met some really nice people, club president and a few others. They have good intentions and I respect that. Which is why I give this two stars. However and sadly, the way this Toastmasters club is facilitated is somewhat unprofessional. Firstly, Membership fee is over 100 pounds a year (and expected to rise), where expectations are not properly managed before somebody signs up as a member. As a member, you are expected to attend 3 hours a week (on a weekday), where speaking opportunities beyond doing roles is limited to once a month! Even now the club rules are not clear to me since you find out the rules on an ad-hoc basis. The speaking opportunities are key to completing your learning pathway, and provides the most value to those trying to improve their public speaking skills, since it teaches you how to publicly speak in a structured way based on a topic of your choice. In my case I found this out after signing up. If you are signing up thinking that because it is weekly you will progress quickly through your pathway, as I did - you are mistaken and like me will probably get frustrated and stop attending once life gets in the way and have felt like you have wasted your time following a lack of opportunities. To get the most out of your toastmasters experience, you will have to roughly commit 144 hours in a year to get less than 15 hours on your learning pathway (exc roles) - not explicitly told before sign up. Hence, the rigidness and lack of operational agility makes it impractical for those with a busy lifestyle, where there is a lack of empathy and respect towards those members who are time poor, and need the club to efficiently help work around their specific needs. I personally felt a negative vibe by certain members after returning following a hectic job change, who I noticed smirking at me struggling on stage doing table topics, and behaving in an unfriendly manner during the break. As a former member, feel very short changed, undermined and frustrated by my Toastmasters experience. I feel as though I’ve wasted my money. Requested a (partial) refund, taking into account not being able to consistently attend, and lodged a complaint which was not taken seriously - sums the experience up. Needs of paid members are not taken seriously, if you are not evangelical. I hope the club becomes more dynamic and has greater agility with the way they operate by moving away from a one size fits all model and adapt based on the diverse needs of members to encourage retention and a richer experience.
