This restaurant is the real deal and deserves its Michelin star, not only for the excellence of the ingredients and the culinary expertise but the fact it does some real regional cooking such as pasta cime di rapa. Wonderful tiramisu and some great wines.

Surprised and rather bemused that a Michelin starred restaurant offers Schär gluten free bread fresh from the supermarket. I had booked a meal for my partner’s birthday so gave good notice in the reservation notes, and also when ordering a gluten free cake, that neither of us eat gluten due to intolerance. Still, when we arrived, and after confirming with our waitress that she knew we were gluten free, we received gluten breadsticks on our table, which led to more confusion and confirming that we were indeed both unable to eat gluten. I had booked Locanda Locatelli knowing that there is coeliac disease in the Locatelli family and that’s why the restaurant offers gluten free bread and pasta. So I expected a certain level of care and was excited that a high-end restaurant catered for gluten-free diets in this way. I expected homemade GF bread or at least an artisan Italian loaf sourced from somewhere like The Gluten Free Bakery. But Schär? Come on Giorgio and team, you can do better. The pasta was also unremarkable considering there are some exceptional GF pastas on the market. The sommelier recommended an excellent biodynamic wine, which I have noticed is on the menu at Terra Rossa, an Italian restaurant in Islington, which looks to have a much better gluten free offering. It might not be deemed worthy of a Michelin star, but it seems more accommodating and authentic, with a variety of GF pasta – orecchietti, paccheri etc. – on the menu. It is frustrating because it is not hard to do gluten free well. Dietary restrictions: Options are available but they are not Michelin star level.

Not great. Stale bread that’s been sitting out long before serving. Two completely unnecessary and somewhat insulting comments made by the staff. Very average food, not very good. Wouldn’t recommend. Very overrated.

Enjoyed the food. Tiramisu was really good, had a very nice rich dark chocolate notes with the pastry on the side adding an unusual element. Things I was put off by were the time it took for the food to arrive and the overall service. Had to constantly flag someone to ask for something such as salt and pepper which was odd that they don’t provide them right away to begin with. Also would really appreciate if the waiter doesn’t take away the bread and without asking.
