So this review is long but explains why I wouldn't recommend you go to Lee Valley Cycles for servicing. I am all for supporting local business but enough is enough for me. In Jan 2021 I bought an orbea mx50 mountain bike. When I collected it from the store the headset was loose and the handle bars went wonky whilst I was riding the bike home. Not a great start but I put this down to the young lad helping in the shop who had perhaps not prepped the bike correctly. In Jan 2022 the bike suffered a major failure when the mech hanger snapped due to mud caused chain sucking ground conditions. This resulted in needing a new chain, rear mech and mech hanger. However on the first ride after taking it home the gears were skipping and it was then discovered that some sprockets on the cassette had teeth missing (lost in the mech damage). Cue a second visit to the shop in as many days for more work to replace the cassette which had gone unnoticed. Move forward to April 2023. Gears begin skipping again and chain comes off front crank. A visit to the shop reveals the chain has worn out and an admonishment from the owner "well if you don't look after it". If you ask my family I look after my bike a lot. So this time - new chain, another new cassette, new crank. I state that I think the derailleur is OK but if needed then it can also be replaced. Dave tells me he has a crank he can put on that is cheaper. Collect after 24 hours. First ride - gears are angrily skipping constantly and chain is off the cogs inside first 10 metres of riding. Any slight incline is unrideable. I contact the store to say I'll be back in 2 days when they reopen after the bank holiday. I arrive and am told to leave the bike there. No apology is offered for the inconvenience caused. I am told to return tomorrow. Tomorrow comes and I return 24 hours later to find my bike only just being looked at. The owner examines the bike and recreates the issue immediately, saying "hmmm I didn't think this crank was as worn as that" . It appears that I have been treated to a second hand, part-used component (which I was charged £40 for fitting). Whilst I did express worry about cost I didn't ask for second hand components. I am the told to come back in another 24 hours. By this point the bike has spent as many days in the last week in the shop as it has out of it. I arrive on the next day to be asked for the difference in price between the second hand and new sprocket. At least I wasn't asked for labour cost to fix a store made problem. Now I learn from getting a second opinion that derailleur is beyond reasonable use. All this when Dave was well aware from conversation with him that the bike is meant to be carrying me round a 300 mile bikepacking event in June 2023. I do think that those of us with cheaper bikes are nor treated with the same level of respect as those who ride the top end bikes.

Excellent. Helpful and knowledgeable. The repair I had carried out resulted in the smooth and satisfying travel of my chain across gears I didn't know I had. As a bonus I purchased two new tyres at as good a price as you'd find online. Two thumbs up

Truly excellent shop and service. Dave is an amazing, community focused person and helps so many locally. I run a local charity and we have started a bicycle recycling scheme supporting many families locally with the support of Lee Valley Cycles. He gives great, sound, advice and has a great range of cycles, accessories and local knowledge as well as chairing Harlow Cycling club with a range of group rides. He really advocates cycling for mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing. A bright spark ✨️ in a small Town ✨️

I went to the shop when he wasn't busy and the attitude I was welcomed with was a bad start also every question I asked he grunted at me and kept smelling his fingers when I was talking. There isn't many bike shops in harlow n I think that's why they don't care about some customers as much as they should.
