First impressions were great. Excellent position on the seafront, close enough to the town centre without being too close, good Google reviews, nice website, exceptional telephone staff while sorting out parking and exchanging pre-arrival calls. The staff were absolutely 5*. Upon arrival, mid-afternoon, the reception really smells of fish. Not nice fresh fish, but stale cooked fish. This turns out to be an issue after each meal sitting, so there’s clearly a problem with air extraction in the kitchens. Desk staff still 5*. We head up to our room – we’d paid the extra for a junior suite – and it was really nicely appointed. The TV was a bit 2005, but we quickly resolved that we weren’t there to watch TV, but to enjoy this seaside town. Bathroom was very modern, housekeeping excellent throughout the room, but… a sheet and blanket on the bed! This really is an anachronism from cheapo seaside B&Bs and should have no place whatsoever in a hotel of this calibre. Really disappointing and really disrupted our sleep on both nights. Headed down to dinner on the first evening and noticed that there was a little bar in the dining room, and a couple of people were having cocktails made for them. What a missed opportunity by the front desk. When we were checking in, they asked if we’d made a dinner reservation and checked to see it was all in order. Easy upselling opportunity here: - I see you’ve got a 6.30 dinner booking. Do you enjoy cocktails? Our barman is a superb cocktail maker… why not come down 30-45 minutes before dinner and enjoy one? We have a fabulous selection. Instead we had to steer our waitress to arranging cocktails to drink with our starters. Which then pushed the bottle of wine with dinner into just two courses. Too much booze too quickly. We would have loved a pre-prandial cocktail though, and they really are excellent – a huge selling point for the hotel; 6 out of 5, hic! The evening meal (2 course for £25; 3 courses for £35) was ridiculously good value. If you’re staying at the Langham, eat there too. If they’d charged ten pounds more per ‘deal’, it would still have been excellent value. The quality of the ingredients, the cooking, the attention to deal on the presentation, was all absolutely perfect across the 6 plates (2 x 3-courses) we had. And the service, once again, was excellent. We couldn’t wait for breakfast the next morning! Breakfast was dreadful. Well, not dreadful, it was edible, but rather mean portions of average quality food, served on large plates with poor presentation – a greasy spoon café would have run rings round them. I don’t know whether they generally have an older clientele with smaller appetites, and were trying to avoid food wastage (which is certainly laudable), but I think it would have been nicer for breakfast diners to have been able to specify exactly what they wanted as part of a cooked breakfast, and in what quantity. Breakfast staff were pleasant enough, but the service consistency wasn’t a patch on the evening crew – from what I could hear from service at other tables, every member of waiting staff seemed to offer something different. Overall – yes, I would return. The owners are clearly very good at hiring and training to a consistent standard; every interaction was excellent. But it would take the issues raised to be addressed for it to get a five star review. Food & drinks: Great cocktails!

1st time I have stayed in this hotel. I loved it. Every member of staff I met or had dealings with were fantastic and very helpful and polite. The bar area is nice, overlooking the sea. My room was a little on the cramped side but to be honest it was fine as I only stayed one night whilst visiting friends. A great all round experience and a great location opposite right on the seafront. Will definitely be staying again.
