  Bill was super helpful and really organised - he gave me an initial quote quickly over text and then confirmed in person shortly after. He fit us in for an urgent repair to our ceiling within a week, which is unparalleled in this environment where most builders are quoting 3-6 months to me. The work done by Bill and Zane was efficient and to a really high quality. Would highly recommend them to anyone and will always keep them in mind for any further work I need.   Really great work from Bill and Zane on my house. It had a botched garage conversion without building regulations. Bill worked with building control to put everything right before doing a fantastic job changing all the internal doors and fitting a fantastic wooden floor thought the downstairs. They really paid attention to detail- making sure every bit was as good as it could be to deliver a fantastic finish throughout and transforming my house.

  Bill and his team have just finished a ground floor extension on our bungalow and we couldn't be happier with the standard to work. These are difficult times and we were warned there would be some potential issues with supplies and the availability of tradesmen. But Bill kept us in the loop with any issues and that meant the entire experience was a lot less stressful as the communication first rate. Since the work was finished I've started noticing a lot more building work near us in Hitchin. Some of those sites look chaotic compared to ours. Bill kept the areas clean and tidy so there were very few disruptions. I'd happily recommend Lakes Carpentry to anyone!

  Bill and his team completed a ground floor extension and loft conversion last year. From start to finish the service was exactly what we'd hoped for! They're punctual, reliable, and cost effective. I had quotes from other companies and although Lakes were the most expensive they worked to the budget and with a very high standard, all of their promises. With building work you get what you pay for and I had confidence that Lakes would be the right choice. 2 years after completion I'm still very happy with the decision.   Bill recently converted our old garage into 2 home offices. He was professional, courteous and communicative throughout the process, and the work was completed in a decent time and as quoted. The specialists he hired (electrician, roofers, bricklayers, asbestos removal people, window fitters) were also very professional and courteous. Bill's employee Zane was also very pleasant, polite and hard working. We would gladly have Lakes carpentry and builders back to quote for our next building project.

  Bill managed the process of fitting a new roof, the removal of a chimney breast across 2 floors and the removal of a structural internal wall, with supporting steel beams inserted to compensate for the changes in loading. The house is a 3 bed semi detached Victorian property. Throughout the process, communication was proactive from Bill, he gave us options at the various forks / complications that we encountered and and went the extra mile to make sure the finished product would be as good as possible, thinking ahead for the future and avoiding shortcuts just because they'd be easier. An example of the latter point was altering our kitchen's plumbing pipework slightly in order to allow another 7-8 inches of head height. Along the way, Bill sort out a skip, re-consulting with structural engineers, masonry, plastering, plumbing, gas safety and probably more. He's clearly passionate about what he does and takes pride in his work and his team did their best to help clean up on what was a messy job on a confined site. We will be using him and his team again. Thank you to all of you. Sam & Florence UPDATE: We have engaged Bill and his team to carry out complex renovation work on our house in Hitchin for a second time, starting in September 2021 This project has involved stripping of the kitchen and dining room, installing fire proof board where necessary, installing steels, taking down an old lean-to single story extension and rebuilding with the old bricks, while increasing the ceiling height, with a new parapet roof and associated drainage. He has also removed old windows for us ready to bring in new crittal / steel windows and doors. Bill's punctuality, reliability, attention to detail, planning, and communication have all been really good as per last time. He leaves the site as organised and tidy as is reasonably possible at the end of the work day. Bill has also worked alongside our chosen contractors and building control for certain parts of the job, and as always, Bill has communicated risks and opportunities that effect the job's outcome along the way.

  I contracted Lakes to convert an unused spa room into a gym. The room had a shower, jacuzzi, and sauna, with dark, dingy tiling on the walls and floor. Removing the equipment and tiling was a messy business but Lakes carried this out with a minimum of fuss and inconvenience. What was previously an unused eyesore of a room is now a gleaming smart area perfect for a home gym. The walls are a gleaming white contrasting beautifully with a light grey composite floor. The team were friendly and considerate contractors. Always on time and fastidiously clean and tidy. I would thoroughly recommend them.

  This was a substantial internal renovation using 2 steel RSJs and laying a completely new wooden floor throughout downstairs. Bill Lake project managed it from start to finish just perfectly. Bill is a rare thing in the building world in that things get done when he promises and stays in constant touch to make sure everything is ok. However Bill also is very much involved in the day to day building work and is a quality craftsman. and a real grafter. Bill has a great team of friendly and highly skilled workers who he uses to carry out the plumbing, electrics etc. Even though this project was disrupted by the Covid lockdown, it was a pleasurable experience and we are delighted with the result. I would highly recommend Lakes Carpentry and Builders.
