My Mother lived at Kalyan Ashram for 8 years when with the onset of Alzheimer’s she needed help with day to day needs. Lunch and evening food was cooked on the premises for her but my wife and I were responsible for ensuring she had food for breakfast, other snacks, drinks, cleaning products and personal hygiene items. As we live in Kent we couldn’t visit as often as we would have liked so the staff regularly let us know what she needed and we did online shops for her. They happily put all the shopping away when it was delivered. From the onset they showered her and coped with her incontinence. Up until the pandemic she went to a Day Centre twice weekly and they ensured she was ready in time for the mini bus that collected her. In the last 2 years of her life she got increasingly immobile so the staff used a wheelchair to push her to the lounge for her daytime meal and to the reception area so she could have more social engagement. They also hoisted her from her bed and chair. The manager liaised with social services to ensure she had all the aids required so that the staff could continue to look after her. Following some mini strokes in the last few weeks of her life she became bed bound and when unable to eat solid fuel they spoon fed her puréed food until she was admitted to hospital where she passed away. The care staff and the manager provided care that was above and beyond what we expected from sheltered plus accommodation. For the reception (wake) after the funeral, the manager gave us the use of the lounge at Gulab Ashram, the affiliated Sheltered Accommodation, where the staff who looked after my Mother even served the food for us. We are extremely grateful to all the staff at Kalyan Ashram for giving my Mum such exceptional care in the last 8 years of her life. We know she was happy there.

I had assumed this was still an active church, but looking into it, found out is now "an extra care sheltered housing complex for older people from South Asian backgrounds"... Kalyan Ashram in it's former life was known as Emmanuel Church & it had opened in 1901 and closed it's doors as a church in 1990; I assume because of it's Grade II listing is why the building still looks like a church today...
