Great place for a large gathering. Interesting properties and lovely countryside. Well appointed for visiting West Bay Lyme etc. We went towards the end of November and it was so nice there were people swimming in the sea without wetsuits! Global warming eh?

Incredible monstrosity that has come to symbolise Colchester by dominating it's skyline for so many decades. Jumbo did not get it's nickname for complimentary reasons, the Balkerne Water Tower representing Victorian era engineering at its red-brick, square column, & cast-iron, zenith. The fact that this no longer functional water tower still stands & has outlasted it's intended working life by so many decades, certainly demands respect for this venerable giant of civil engineering. For as long as I can remember, controversy & dispute has been raging about what to do with Jumbo next, with none of the proposals ever amounting to anything. The fact is that so-called 'Jumbo' amounts to an iron tank mounted on 5 solid brick pedestals. I like this piece of architecture. You can't go in it and there has been damage done by vandals. After years of neglect work is being done on it, so sometime I'm hoping that a visit will be possible'
