I worked in the UK branch on a temporary contract for 9 weeks. From my first day I noticed my supervisor had a hostile attitude. She didn't seem to value basic social niceties and lacked interpersonal skills. When a job is repetitive, insecure and pays minimum wage the staff will tend to look to management for motivation. Everytime I had to endure interactions with her I felt like quitting on the spot. I was constantly made to feel like a nuisance if I asked any questions and was spoken to like a child. But the final straw for me was experiencing blatent sexism. I was given a large frame which required a length of wood to be cut to size but I was told to let one of the men use the saw. I have a professional background and a university degree involving carpentry so I'm more than capable of using basic hand tools. I had to take him away from his work then stand and watch him do it for me. The baton was too short so I remeasured and was about to cut it myself when my supervisor approached me, quickly took the saw and told me to get the man to do it for me. I told her I make furniture for a living and challenged her assumptions based on my gender. She told me that the women only use the saw if they have no choice when there are no men around. Sexism is dangerous, offensive and destructive. It has no place in a modern work environment and shouldn't be tolerated, however casual or indirect. I felt patronised, under appreciated and uncomfortable working under this type of management.
