  I bought an Ikawa roaster with the hopes of developing different roasts and learning more about the roasting process. It was only after purchasing and receiving the roaster that I found out you have to pay £30 per month to be able to customise the roast graph and fan speeds which is not mentioned up front and really requires some digging on the website to find this out, meaning that this will be a shock for most people. I have had a number of roasts where the beans will not spin as it appears the fan speed is too low and there is no way for me to fix this without having to pay £30 per month which I am not willing to do as it seems an extortionate amount of money just to be able to edit a graph, a feature which I cannot believe is not included in the purchase of the roaster.

  I’ve always loved my coffee and the main part for me is the coffee beans. We have all bought bad quality burnt beans and regretted it, with Ikawa you are fully In control of the process, I love how easy the machine is to use and it gives stunning results each time. Once you have started roasting your own coffee you won’t go back to shop bought beans. I also really enjoy using ikawa green beans as you get a fantastic back story about them, coupled with a simple QR code that makes it a doddle to roast. Yes the initial cost of the machine is expensive but in my opinion it’s worth every penny, plus points that it’s designed and built in London which is a rare thing these days.

  The Ikawa home roaster arrived very attractively and carefully packaged with the device, manual etc. and six packs of green coffee beans to experiment roasting on. Having the green beans there from the outset was a big bonus. The roaster is solidly constructed in steel not plastic, with key elements in stainless steel, and the whole thing looks and feels very professional and upmarket. It is obviously a premium product, designed for a discerning user, and I would expect it to be featured in the glossy mags and available in John Lewis and leading retailers. I don't think it is, but there again, why give so much margin to the retailers if it's available direct? Roasting was easy. I tried my hand at a friend's big professional roaster earlier in the year which is used commercially. I was delighted to find that the Ikawa's roasting cycle was about 12 minutes shorter. At 7 minutes from start to finish the Ikawa provided perfectly roasted beans which were cool the touch. All the chaff was separated and the kitchen smelled fabulous with the unique aroma of roasted beans. The little tray for loading the dose is a bit unnecessary as the beans can spill over, but it's a nice touch. The roaster's firmware needed updating and the engineers should note that there's a little bug which allows the app to update the roaster over again, even when unnecessary. Apart from that the app worked flawlessly. Nice app too. Simple but intuitive. I had to just trust the roasting profiles rather than listen for a "first crack", but the end result told me that the technology and profiles worked harmoniously. I scanned the profile codes in for the 6 coffee bag selections. I did wonder whether a way of sorting my list would become essential or at least a way of easily identifying particular "favourites". Otherwise it could become a very long list. Overall .... 10/10. A worthy addition to our kitchen appliances. Coffee mornings will be back in fashion!
