We visited the gardens, but not the historic stone built house on our visit. There are many aspects to the gardens, with cool shady wooded areas running with wild garlic and ferns, to more formal laid out areas. There are a number of beautiful stone garden buildings scattered through the gardens which give a place to sit a take refuge from the sun (if its hot!). Overall its a very relaxed place to visit, and as visitors are limited not too crowded. The property is set on the side of the hill, so some areas can be quite steep to walk, but the landscape also gives the opportunity for quite a number of paths, criss-crossing through the landscape with great views. You could walk through in a couple of hours, but alternatively while the whole day away. The cafe was buisy and seating a bit tight, but quality of food was good. We'll with a visit...or two.

This garden is in a stunning location, but after visiting other local gardens this proved a slight disappointment. The gardens are well laid out but apart from the stunning wisteria there were few other major shrubs in flower. It could do with some more imaginative planting. We went to the cafe for morning coffee - which was very good, and lunch, which was very disappointing. If you are coeliac then don't bother with the cafe. Apart from one vegan salad there was no other choice. Most cafes these days can manage GF options, including GF bread or rolls and soup. We did not sample the restaurant so cannot comment on that menu. There was jazz music being played at lunchtime which I personally found unwelcome. In a beautiful setting like that I would rather listen to the sounds of nature than the sound of jazz.

Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed, and there's an outdoor seating area outside the café that's particularly dog-friendly. Be aware though that the garden has a lot of wisteria, which is extremely toxic to dogs (particularly the seed pods). Make sure the dog stays away from them, and maybe clean their paws afterwards.

One of my favourite places! Beautiful gardens, the wisteria was looking amazing. Cafe and restaurant were very busy but the service was friendly and I didn't have to wait too long for my food.
