For anybody like me who worships Alfred the Great this little Abbey is truly hallowed ground . The man himself remains his wifes Ealhswiths and his sons Edward the Elders remains were carried in state through Winchester and interred here in 1110 . Unfortunately it has been through the wars over the years and Alfred is now lost . I like to believe he is awaiting the right time to return and make his nation truly great again ! But that's just me .

The probably location of King Alfred the Great’s burial. Under the altar of the old abbey. A nice place and somewhere to stop and think. To picture the great abbey that would have stood here long ago. Before the dissolution. Worth a wander through and a sit down.

Hyde monastery was the largest and wealthiest monastery in Hampshire, founded to house the tombs of King Alfred, his wife, and their son Edward who succeeded him. The garden marks the site of the monastic Abbey church, with columns of holly marking the probable positions of the original building. A tasteful memorial to two of the Saxon kings who started the process of uniting the various tribes around the country to form modern England. The size of the monastery can be guaged by the distance that you have to walk from the ruins of the old entrance archway down to the garden.
