Spent an hour on hold. Finally got through, gave my name put on hold for another 5 minutes then when she came back couldn't hear me and hung up instead of trying to resolve the issue. Had no call back. Absolute waste of time.

Utterly, utterly hopeless service, whether by telephone or the internet. They might at least have someone available to deal with registering a death, as if bereavement itself were not traumatic enough...!

Having registered both births and deaths previously I am not without experience. This time it was the registration of our Sons birth. What a truly horrible experience. The website is out of date as the entrance is currently closed and the main entrance has to be used, this is not what it says online. No signs on any of the doors to point this out. This made us approximately 5 mins late for our appointment. However, the waiting area had no information on what to do and the only office in use seemed to be the hub of people entering and exiting without any regard to people waiting. A simple somebody will be with you shortly, would have been the least to expect. When the elderly female registrar decided to stick her head around the door the greeting was frosty and like we were an inconvenience. She then proceeded to ask if my partner if she knew the appointment was 15 minutes ago. We replied yes but have been waiting for 10 minutes in the waiting area as advised to do by the man at the entrance. The response was a grunt. The desk she sat behind was shielded by a perspex screen. She made a huge point of addressing me partner only and asking if she wanted me, the child's Father adding to the birth certificate. She then explained that it would grant me parental responsibility. We know and as a stable couple and parents to our Son that is exactly what we want, not someone making out it was the wrong choice for my Partner and Son. Helpfully my partner had written all the required details down to aid the registrar on spelling. Apparently this piece of paper was riddled with covid and the black death as she most certainly couldn't take it or have anything on her side of the desk. However, when she then required us to check the certificate and sign she put the paper on a clip board and passed it to us with her pen and then took it back to her side of her desk. The whole process was like getting a visa on a former soviet country. The registration wasn't a happy process and this woman made the entire event awkward and miserable. Goodness help anyone who has to register a death with her. So in conclusion Council. Retrain this woman and if she is incapable of providing even a modicum of customer service sack her. To the registrar concerned, you are a disgrace to your profession and need to either sort yourself out or retire.
