My roof refurbishment started with a request to HR, whose leaflet had been put through my door, to sort out the gutters, for which they offered a quote. As it seemed very straightforward and relatively simple, I did not seek any local recommendations but was assured HR had done a considerable amount of work in the vicinity, which I could check. On inspection, it was clear that the soffit and fascia would not bear new gutters, so a further estimate was provided to renew them. This involved scaffolding. As the scaffolding was by now in place there was little option but to proceed with HR rather than obtaining a separate estimate. Once the fascia and soffits were removed, the rafters, joists, battens and beams were revealed and required significant attention in terms of replacement and reinforcement. The advice was to renew the roof structure, re-tile and re-hip. Additional scaffolding was needed for this. This resulted in an eye-watering further quote but had to be done. For a non-expert, these huge prices are always difficult to assess but, on more than one occasion, I was told I was getting a good deal and, indeed, HR were going to be out of pocket on the project. To be fair, the cost of materials had significantly risen over the previous weeks. Work started immediately and together with Eustace (spelling? A Romanian) hard graft began. The roof was stripped revealing some rotten spars which had to be reinforced and strengthened. Loose brickwork had to be replaced and cemented in. A team of roofers were employed to do the tiling which was speedily achieved before the rains came. Thereafter, boarding was put in place prior to the soffit and fascia. Gutters swiftly followed. Further re-tiling and re-pointing was required on the rear extension of the house, resulting in more expense. On completion, the scaffolding was immediately removed, masses of rubbish taken away and the whole area hosed down and properly cleaned. Throughout I had a harmonious relationship with Harry and Jason Ross, although there were, understandably, stressful moments and some differences. There was a good deal of Irish banter which enlivened the operation. I was offered a further deal to secure the side brickwork and paint the front of the house, which I rejected for the time being. Eustace worked extremely hard and nothing was too much or a problem for him. A Guarantee for 7 years was provided and Harry assured me that if any problem arose, he'd come round immediately and deal with it. I would certainly recommend anyone with a problem such as this to have HR produce an estimate. I suggest this could well be competitive.
