I run my weekly Slimming World Groups here and it's an amazing space, bright and airy and focusses on supporting the community where they can. The place is lovely and clean, theres a big car park on site and the church staff are always on hand when needed. If you need a space for your community group, consider this venue.

The Mystery Worshippers

What was the date and name of the service? 5th March 2022. Saint Melangell Orthodox Church: Vespers for the Sunday of Lent How full was the building? There were six of us in total. The three of us made up 50% of the congregation. Did anyone welcome you personally? Yes, the deacon, Cyprian Astley, gave all of us a warm welcome. Was your pew comfortable? Yes, the chairs were comfy. How would you describe the pre-service atmosphere? Vespers is new to us, and we really liked the candlelit, broody, old-school, mellow and archaic pre-service atmosphere. What were the exact opening words of the service? “Good evening and welcome to vespers for the first Sunday of lent.” What books did the congregation use during the service? Vespers for the Sunday of Lent. What musical instruments were played? None. Did anything distract you? The service book and responses took some getting used to. We were holding candles and service books in one hand and turning pages with the other, which was tricky at times. Was the worship stiff-upper-lip, happy clappy, or what? Very liturgical, old-fashioned and traditional. It wasn’t easy for a newbie, but we found it somber and deeply moving. Exactly how long was the sermon? 9 minutes. On a scale of 1-10, how good was the preacher? We gave him 7, 7 and 5 respectively. In a nutshell, what was the sermon about? The temptation of Christ. Which part of the service was like being in heaven? The prayers, the candles, the singing, the authenticity and genuineness of it all. And which part was like being in... er... the other place? We struggled a little with the unfamiliar format and liturgy. What happened when you hung around after the service looking lost? We chatted a bit with the deacon who made us feel welcome to join again. How would you describe the after-service coffee? We were offered orange juice, but we declined as we were off elsewhere. How would you feel about making another visit (where 10 = ecstatic, 0 = terminal)? The three of us gave the following scores: 5, 5, 2. Did the service make you feel glad to be a Christian? Our responses are: “Yes, I wish more people could see this – you can’t buy this.” “Yes. It had a certain humility about being a Christian – this highlighted it.” “Yes. It was lovely, moving and moody.” What one thing will you remember about all this in seven days' time ? All three of us said the power of candles. Final reflections: Saint Melangell’s is small and fairly new Western Orthodox church. Whilst it may have humble stature, it has an authentic and enthusiastic heart for worshiping God. We were blown away by the candlelit liturgy which moved us quite deeply. If you want a taste of genuine old-school Orthodox liturgy, this is where you go.

A modern spacious church that is community-centred. It houses a very good Day Child Care and many uniform groups - Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Cubs, Rainbows etc. Also operated from there are, Making Space, Knit & Matter, Weigh Watchers and Indoor Bowling.
