A wonderful example of a Suffolk medieval wool church (financed by local wool merchants) and well worth a visit. The equally impressive wool church at Lavenham is just down the road too.

The Holy Trinity Church Long Melford is a delightful place what a beautiful Church it kind of reminded me anyway of the one in Blythburgh . The Reredos was made in 1877 and is amazing made of Caen Stone and based on a painting of the Crucifixion by Albrecht Durer . There was also a great stained glass window depicting the Saints Felix , Alban and Erkanbald . Now being a major geek I could understand Felix and Alaban but Erkanbald kind of puzzled me being kind of sad I had heard of him . I know he was involved in the building of a Cathedral in Germany and I know that his remains have recently been found . But why does he appear in Long Melford ? Its a mystery to me and I am sure it shall remain so . I quite like to think that when I die someone might dedicated a window to me in Mainz but I doubt it . There are some very impressive tombs too most notably the one of Sir William Cordell . Very Nice . I think I may have solved my Erkanbald dilemma . It turns out there was an Erkanbald in Germany and an Erkenwald in England . Both were Bishops one of London and one of Mainz . All I can guess at is some kind of confusion between the two ? This may be wrong but is best I can arrive at . If perchance I receive some sort of Divine intervention and am told the true explanation I shall update you if I survive the shock .
