Terry came round to give a quote, he initially came with an older man and appeared to know what he was doing he quoted us a price we thought was not cheap but reasonable. The red flags started flashing when we kept asking him to update the quote to reflect what he had agreed to with more details as he quoted 'works as agreed'. He did eventually but it was again not as detailed as we would have liked, and also we didn't agree to pay to 50% so we agreed stages as we had been duped before. He started on the 24th May with the first payment and on the first day it was just himself and a lad of 16/17 not 3 or 4 as he stated. They spent the first day understanding the remit, which we had to repeat so much, and kept checking as they were doing it incorrectly. They started with laying grano everywhere they didn't wack the type one nor level. They started the gully and left them to jump onto other stuff never finishing one thing at a time nor preparing the areas which is key! On the second day he brought his son Ben who is a complete novice! Between him and the young lad they were operating the tile cutter which was not working properly and imagine you have expensive porcelain tiles! Terry initially started doing the borders with an incorrect string line, and used wooden pencils as spacers which he pertained were 10ml!!! He didn't ask us what spacing we would like we stated 5ml when we asked him where the spacers were he stated its fine to use pencil! He didn't ask us if we wanted staggered or staged, he went for staged as if he could managed the accuracy of the lines but he was a novice! We measured the gaps and there were all different so we brought our own spacers of 7ml as that appeared consistent with the pencils he started with! We also bought sponges to wipe the cement off, which they didn't make use of and all the tiles are stained. We also suggested using a roller to prime the slabs not a trouf he said a trouf is better!. Ben was left to lay the tiles when Terry was not around and it was so out of line and up and down we told him this and he stated he would rectify it only to pack to go home! We were on the job cleaning, digging, watching the tiles get worse and worse, the lines were all out there was gaps in the slurry under the slab the cement was left on the tile which now means the tiles are all stained and worse of all the levels are all out!!!! In four days they laid around 50 tiles which will all have to be thrown out and redone! On the fourth day they finished early packed all the tools, the tile cutter was not working and Terry tried to sharpen the blade instead of changing it, we had to stop him from cutting tiles in case we lost any more, as there were loads of wastage!!! They packed theirs and my tools and took them home pertaining they needed the tools to fix their shed! On Monday Terry returned no tools on board and no other workman, but to tell us he wanted more money, we stated he needed to rectify the job before we paid him any more!!! The astro turf is also not what he pertains he is paying for. Terry tried to pressure us into paying more and then he would carry on he said, but it was clear his intentions were to walk, he stated there was nothing wrong with his work and that were just fussy!!!! We have had all the experts down and they all agree with us that they would NOT pay a penny for the job and that he should refund us all the money as we have lost all the tiles they are moving, out of line, stained and the levels are not correct!!!! Maybe his specialism is astro turf, but him and his labourers work is below substandard - stay well clear of this company!!!!
