Went on a guided tour of the West Cemetery. Terry, our volunteer Guide, was very knowledgeable and took time to explain everything thoroughly. Beautiful architecture, fascinating history and slightly voyeuristic. Definitely worth visiting.

This was my very favorite place in London. I've never seen a Victorian graveyard before and this place with it's sunken, toppled and crowded tombstones was so serene and stunningly beautiful.

I See Dead People - We began our exploration of Great Britain with a tour of a cemetery. West Highgate Cemetery, although not the oldest in London, is one of the earliest private cemeteries. Until the 19th century, most people were buried in Anglican churchyards. But, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, London was busting at the seams with a growing population and consequently its need for burial space. Today, Highgate is a “history book” of the life and times of London from 1839 to the present. Our guide, Peter, was great. The 90 minute tour was not long enough. Helpful Hint: You can buy a handbook guide as part of your guided tour. I highly recommend buying it. Also, be sure to save some time to see the Each Highgate Cemetery.
