HG Construction were commissioned to carry out a prestigious landmark build in in Cambridge for us to complete at the end of October 2017. Practical completion was 4 months' late. HG used a delay in the power installation to contractually sidestep the penalty clause and to levy huge additional charges although completion would have been no earlier had the power had not been an issue. There were major issues which were apparently due to incorrect setting out and resulted in the prefabricated frame not lining up. The company attempted to fix this by cutting and very badly welding the frame instead of using the existing bolt holes. We had to draft in experts to deal with this and a multitude of other problems. In conclusion, the building is not to the standard that I would expect of a "professional" contractor, it went way over budget, I did not like the attitude of the management, we lost prospective tenants as a result of all the issues, the problems have put a lot of unnecessary strain on me, my staff and our finances. The fiasco certainly hasn't done our reputation any good either. A year from practical completion, and we are still dealing with significant problems. We currently have £85m worth of prestigious new build in the pipeline (2019). It goes without saying that HG Construction are not considered to be competent and will not be allowed anywhere near any of our new developments!
