Incompetent and dishonest. Hired Alex Graham, of Heckford Norton to represent my 14 year old daughter in Youth Court. The evidence against her was very dubious. When asked, Mr Graham refused to give any assessment as to what he thought was the strength of the evidence so far offered by police. He also refused to answer my questions regarding what obligations the CPS had to adhere to. Instead he made up false obligations for my daughter, telling us our daughter would have to answer a series of questions put to her by the court at a case management hearing. This turned out to be an outright falsehood. There was no obligation for our daughter to answer any questions. She could submit a defence case statement, outlining the nature of her defence, if she chose to. But this is not obligatory in magistrate court and there were no questions from the court for her to answer. All Mr Graham seemed interested in doing was putting pressure on our daughter as if he thought he was an extension of the police. There to try and get a confession rather than defend her legally, as was his job. He failed to spot or inform us that the police had failed to arrange any formal ID procedure in breach of PACE code D para 3.12. A failure that made the one scrap of dubious evidence the police were relying on, that much more dubious. I refused to let our daughter give Mr Graham any further instruction until he answered our outstanding questions regarding CPS obligations. He refused to answer and instead informed us he was withdrawing his services. We them hired another firm of solicitors, who TBH were not much better than Graham. They also failed to identify the PACE code D breach by police. I ended up getting rid of them too and with a bit of help from a barrister who spotted the police PACE code breach, I corresponded with the CPS myself on behalf of my daughter and the case against her was eventually dropped before trial. Mr Graham needs to realise this is not a game and the consequences of his incompetence and dishonesty can have very real and serious implications to his clients' lives and future prospects. He needs to focus more on what's coming from the opposing side and that they are fulfilling their obligations and less on making up false obligations for his clients. Would not recommend.
