I cannot recommend more highly the team from Houghtons of York who restored two early 19th century windows on my listed property. They kept to the agreed period of work despite finding extra work that needed their expertise. They were considerate while working inside and outside the house and left me reassured that the windows will be in good order for a good time yet!

As usual, an excellent job - carried out at very short notice, within a very limited time-frame. Repair/replacement of woodwork on several windowframes, including 2 attic windows, on a 4-storey listed building. In rapid succession Houghtons visited to assess the job, sent their team up the scaffolding to remove the 2 attic windows entirely, passed these to the workshops - who suggested an improvement on the original plan - reinstated the windows, completed all other work ... within days, and at a time when the firm was unusually busy with other work. So - many thanks to all concerned, for the rapid response and 'extra mile' planning and organisation, as well as for the high standard of workmanship. Couldn't be bettered.

A truly terrible experience. Houghtons of York asked us for a 25% deposit by bank transfer in advance for installing new stairs. We were not allowed to pay by credit card which would have offered us protection. The installation could not go ahead due to lack of headroom in the stairwell and we remain puzzled as to why this was not noticed immediately on the first visit. Houghtons deducted a substantial amount from our deposit: most of the charges were a surprise and we received no prior written notice detailing them. This company should put any charges which they wish to make in writing in advance and then there can be no room for disputes.

From minor front door repairs, to dormer restoration, to servicing and repairing a full elevation of sash windows. They've managed all the trades - scaffolders, decorators, joiners etc - and made life as simple as possible for us. They would always be our first port of call.

We could not be happier with the result and throughout the process the team were on hand to guide, advise and update. They reused the old ironmongery and the quality of the oaks shines through. Complete waste of time. Requested a quote to replace sash window. Took the morning off work for the appointment. Two salesmen arrived, measured up, talked through the options. Said I would receive a quote in 7 - 10 days. 4 weeks went by without any contact so I called and chased, was told it was on its way. After 6 weeks, still no quote or contact so I called again to be told it was "just being signed off". TWELVE weeks now and no contact, no quote, they have just ghosted us. A complete waste of my time. Don't waste yours with this company.

Houghton's recently did a full restore of our front elevation windows (plus select other little add ons) and we couldn't recommend them highly enough - the end product is of the highest quality and their service throughout was first class. The nature of our work was moderately complicated (listed building, lots of unknowns once you get under the skin etc.) and affected several key rooms in our house. Throughout the process, Houghtons were considerate, regularly worked around our needs and schedule and always offered a variety of options with plenty of information and consultation to get the best outcome. We ended up with exactly what we wanted. The best testimony we can give is that we have several other jobs in mind for future and we haven't thought twice about who to use - we'll be going back to Houghtons for as much as possible!
